"Mentoring has helped me to back to work"

lamp03Mentor Sandy Gloag (right) with Zayba Habib-Sharma at Hammersmith Job Centre

After a long and successful career Sandy Gloag found herself unemployed. “I’d worked hard all my adult life but about four years ago due to health issues I had to claim incapacity benefit. Although I started to make a recovery physically I found that the longer I was out of the job market the less confidence I had. About a year ago I saw that Hammersmith & Fulham adult education service were running a FREE course which teaches you to become a mentor so that you can help others develop their skills and move into further study or employment. I was sure they wouldn’t accept me but I sent in an email and received a phone call from Fiona Wilson who was running the course. She was very friendly and encouraging and made me realise that I did have something to offer and so I enrolled.

I learned to identify my strengths and how best to utilise them. Slowly my confidence returned and I recognised that I had to accept the limitations my health problems imposed upon me and work within those boundaries.

By finding a balance in my life I can still work and help others find the confidence to apply for work.
I am currently working as volunteer mentor at Hammersmith Job Centre which is incredibly satisfying
Sandy’s line manager, Zayba habib-Sharma, the advisory services manager at the job centre said:
“We identified that a mentoring service would be especially useful with incapacity clients. It helps to build confidence in clients that don’t believe in themselves and awakens the realisation that they can find work and achieve. We’re very happy to have Sandy with us and know that she will contribute a lot.”
