Skills For Life, Literacy & Numeracy > Literacy & numeracyLiteracyEntry level 1 You will learn to read and understand everyday signs, simple notes and begin writing sentences. You will also practise your speaking and listening skills such as following simple instructions. Entry level 2 You will learn to read and understand short pieces like a simple letter or written instructions and to write accurate sentences. You will also learn basic spelling rules, grammar and punctuation. You will also practise your speaking and listening skills such as giving clear directions. Entry level 3 Building on Entry level 1 & 2 you will develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. You will cover a wide range of formal and informal situations such as job applications/CV writing, interviews or producing simple reports. Level 1 At this level you will be working more independently on longer and more complicated reading and writing. If you need to improve your speaking and listening skills at this level, you can attend separate classes. At this stage you may be working towards national tests and considering further study. Level 2 (fast track) This is a one term course to prepare students for National test level 2. You will concentrate on reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and will have practice in taking tests. Additional speaking and listening classes are also available. GCSE English In this one-year (Sept - June) course, you will study some literature and various aspects of language to take GCSE English at Higher level (Grades A - C). This will include coursework (work done during the year, written and oral), and two exams. Classes are offered in the day or the evening. Numeracy Maths for everyone All levels You will work with your teacher to draw up a learning programme suited to your needs. This will cover understanding numbers and different ways of counting; calculating with whole numbers and fractions, decimals and percentages; using measurements; and using and understanding charts, tables and graphs. Maths for study If you need extra support with GCSE maths or other courses, or if you are working towards National Numeracy Tests, these workshops and small group sessions will help you to progress. GCSE maths In this one-year course (September - June) you will study the maths required for GCSE maths at Intermediate level (Grades B - D). This will include coursework (work done during the year), and two exams, one with and one without the use of a calculator. Classes are available both in the day and the evening. Open Learning Open Learning is an alternative way of learning, which takes place at WIN (Walk in Numeracy) from 15.00-21.00 on Tuesday and Thursday in term time. You can just drop in between these times and a tutor will be available to help with your English or maths. You don’t have to be attending other classes. For example, if you need help to work on your CV or a job application, help with an assignment for another course, or need help with writing a letter, you can come to Open Learning.
